Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting stable, enriching friendships between children and adult mentors.  We serve children between the ages of six and thirteen from 15 communities in the southern midcoast region, including Topsham, Brunswick, and Bath.  The mission of our organization is to help children get the adult support they need to live happier, more productive lives.

We offer two main programs: community-based mentoring and school-based mentoring.  The community program matches carefully screened adult volunteers with children for a friendship of at least one year.  These pairs spend 12 hours per month together enjoying activities they have in common. Our school-based program matches adults with children in local elementary and middle school.  These matches meet once a week for an hour throughout the school year.

The Bowdoin mentoring initiative strives to provide local children and youth with well trained, positive college student role models. All mentors attend an initial training and have the option to attend refresher trainings throughout the year. Each program involves a one-on-one match between a child and college student. Mentors find a convenient time in their schedule to meet with their mentee, on average, once a week, for an hour and are asked to commit an entire academic year to the program. Currently the Bowdoin initiative includes:

Bears and Cubs
A mentoring program for children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Bowdoin Central School Mentoring
A mentoring program for elementary students at Bowdoin Central School.

Falcon Friends
Bowdoinham Community School mentoring program.

Harpswell Islands Mentoring

Connections' mission is to provide volunteer mentors to all students who need the support of a caring adult to realize their full potential. Connections recruits, screens, and trains mentors who are then matched to a student based on gender and interests. The school, with the help of Connections, finds places for the students and mentors to meet during school, on school grounds, during one of the student's study hall once a week. Connections is not a tutoring or counseling program, our goal is to simply provide students with an adult to let them know that they matter.

The secret is simple: an adult has taken the time to show they care.

Maine Mentoring Partnership, Inc. (MMP) established in 2001 is a statewide public-private partnership of mentoring program providers, government, funders and supporters. It is an initiative of Maine Children's Cabinet. Its work reflects widespread belief among stakeholders that assuring children and youth access to a caring adult is a top priority, and that mentoring is a highly effective but under-utilized strategy for doing this in Maine.

Our mission is to promote, advocate, foster and support child and youth mentoring programs throughout Maine with the goal of providing appropriately recruited, screened, trained and supported mentors for 35,000 Maine children and youth.
